Buried in the Wall of the State Capitol

Buried in the wall of the State Capitol building is a man who, today, is a lesser known figure in Tennessee history. Today on POTUS7, we discuss the career of architect William Strickland.

An architect, an engineer, and an artist Strickland was a star in Philadelphia before he finished out his career in Tennessee. His storied career begins with the influence of luminaries like Benjamin Latrobe and is passed down through famous figures like Thomas Ustick Walter.  While he is less known today, his status as one of the masters of the neoclassical and Greek Revival styles is unquestioned. His eight years in Nashville left an indelible mark on the city.
