At Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, we are dedicated to the upkeep and preservation of history for future generations. Thanks to funding from the State of Tennessee, a new boiler and HVAC system are being installed in the mansion. These improvements are essential for the preservation of the building, the artifacts it houses and the comfort of our visitors. Please excuse the construction while this project takes place!
#OnThisDay August 2, 1837 – Rebuilding of The Hermitage mansion completed – A devastating fire heavily damaged the Hermitage mansion in the fall of 1834. Rebuilding soon began, but due to changes in design, shortage of workers and normal work delays, construction was not completed until 1837. The total cost of rebuilding and refurbishing The Hermitage mansion exceeded $12,000, all of which the President paid.
