While visiting, you may see construction equipment, temporary fencing and some trenches, as our pathways are being upgraded. Thanks to an appropriation from the State of Tennessee, our new pathways will be wider and smoother, allowing for easier access to key points across the property. During this project, navigating our 1,120-acre National Historic Landmark can be challenging. We apologize for any inconvenience but appreciate your understanding and patience. We look forward to showing you our new and improved, more accessible pathways this summer!
Monday, June 19, 9 a.m. - Friday, June 23, 4 p.m.

#OnThisDay, May 28th, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. The federal government began to make treaties exchanging Native American land east of the Mississippi River for lands in the territories west of the river. The government was to compensate the relocated peoples for the land. However, this did not always happen.
During his two terms in office, Jackson signed more than 60 land cession treaties, resulting in the relocation of nearly 50,000 American Indians.
This “Map Showing the Lands assigned to Emigrant Indians West of Arkansas & Missouri” shows the approximate boundaries of the tribes relocated to the new Indian Territory west of the Mississippi by 1836
