The Jacksons raised a number of children at The Hermitage despite never having biological children of their own. Here is the story of one of those children.
In his will, John Hutchings left the guardianship of his son, Andrew Jackson Hutchings, to his “beloved friend,” Andrew Jackson. Jackson was not only a friend and a business partner but was family. John was the son of Rachel’s sister, Catherine Donelson, and Thomas Hutchings. “Hutchings,” as the great-nephew was called, came to live at The Hermitage at age 5 upon the deaths of both of his parents. He was expected to be educated, but Hutchings was not particularly interested and instead determined unnecessary for his chosen profession as a farmer.
Though this ward troubled Jackson through various rebellious actions, he was determined to guide Hutchings through his trials. Hutchings eventually became a farmer, tending to his inherited plantation in Alabama. In August 1833, he married cousin Mary, the daughter of General John Coffee, also an executor of Hutchings’s estate, and Mary Donelson. He died of consumption in 1841 at the age of 28.
