Occupied by the Union throughout most of the war, Nashville was ruled by a uneasy alliance of occupiers and occupied. This protected the city from the destruction that other southern cities experienced. Yet, not everything was perfect. The Union commanders in Civil War Nashville had a problem–rampant prostitution. Today we look at how Major General William Rosecrans attempted to first rid the city of prostitution and, eventually, coexist with it.
