“These are the shadows of things that have been. That they are what they are, do not blame me!” – Ghost of Christmas Past, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Telling ghost stories in the darkest part of the year has been popular for centuries. Keeping with this age-old tradition, The Hermitage will host Haunted Holidays ghost tours this Christmas season. This distinctly spooky exploration of the mansion, grounds and cemetery by lantern light will recount the strange encounters recorded (and even recently witnessed) on our site, including the ghosts of the Battle of New Orleans, sounds of children running in the upstairs hallway and Jackson’s infamous meeting with Tennessee’s Bell Witch. Guides will share with guests the somber atmosphere at The Hermitage during Jackson’s time due to his dear wife Rachel’s death just three days before Christmas in 1828. Beware of eerie encounters—you may meet some real holiday spirits on this tour!
