On June 19, 1865, word finally reached the westernmost frontier of Texas that the war had ended and all slavery in the United States was finally at an end. Over the decades since, it has become a nationally celebrated moment of emancipation and a new chapter in our history.
Explore the in-depth stories of the men and women who were enslaved and emancipated from The Hermitage, and the different paths they took. Staff will offer continuous talks throughout the afternoon. You’ll also have the chance to speak with historian Dr. Crystal deGregory about Emancipation in Tennessee and how it took hold in many different ways across the country.
We will also be offering a FREE Genealogy workshop at 2:00p in partnership with the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. Individual Consultations 3:00-5:00p. Click here for more information.
