Plantations such as The Hermitage were not just homes – they were businesses. Operating The Hermitage as a cotton plantation required significant management skills of not only the master, but the mistress, and depended on the slavery system to turn a large profit. Stop by the cotton field and learn about the operations of plantations such as The Hermitage, from the agricultural seasons and mechanics used to the stories and impact of the economic system on the enslaved laborers and their families. Guests may also get the chance to meet Sarah Yorke Jackson, the President’s daughter-in-law who came from Philadelphia to live and manage much of the plantation for 56 years.
