Tradition dictated that a large dinner, with many toasts, was held every April 13 to commemorate the birthday of Jefferson. This year marks the 190th anniversary of this tradition. Knowing that many nullifiers were present in the audience, Jackson raised an intense toast: “Our Union: It must be preserved.”
