Tulip Grove Needlework Kit
Ten- year- old Emily Tennessee Donelson, niece of President Andrew Jackson, worked this sampler in 1817 on linen fabric. The design in this kit is a counted cross stitch adaptation of her original sampler using modern fabric and thread. The authenticity of Emily’s work is retained, including uneven stitches and adjustments in spacing and spelling. For example, when she ran out of space in the second line of the education motto, she creatively changed inclined to inclind and squeezed up the letters so that everything would fit!
